The October horror slot has a leader. Other Mommy, the Universal and Blumhouse supernatural horror film starring Jessica Chastain, opened at No. 1 on the weekend of October 9–11 with $27,805,825, and across its two weekends in the October 2–18 window it grossed a combined $36,010,505 — second only to Verity among all films in the period. Its domestic total through Sunday, October 18 is $44,709,120. All figures are Box Office Mojo’s.
The film’s second weekend tells the standard horror story: October 16–18 brought $8,204,680 and a No. 3 finish behind the openings of Street Fighter and You Can See Everything. A drop of about 70 percent from opening weekend is steep for most genres and routine for horror, whose audiences concentrate on opening weekend; the film still out-grossed every holdover in the market that weekend except the two debuts.
Other Mommy is directed by Rob Savage and runs 1 hour 33 minutes, rated R for some bloody violence and language. It is adapted from Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House. Chastain plays Ursula — and the entity. Jay Duplass plays her husband, and Arabella Olivia Clark plays their eight-year-old daughter, Bela.
The premise: Bela, whose parents’ marriage is strained, forms a bond with a sinister entity that crawls out of her closet and looks and sounds exactly like her mother. The entity — which Bela calls “Other Mommy” — then turns its attention on the whole family. The double casting of Chastain as both mother and monster is the film’s central device, and its marketing image.
On the combined three-weekend chart, Other Mommy’s $36.0 million was built in only two weekends, since it opened a week after Verity; per weekend in release, it is the second-strongest performer of October. Blumhouse’s model — a contained premise, one location at the center, a star in a dual role — has produced the month’s horror benchmark, and the film goes into the Halloween frames as the genre title to beat.
